Position Description

The Workshop Supervisor is responsible for the safe, efficient, and well-organised running of the maintenance workshop. The role provides frontline supervision of all workshop activities from daily operations and tool management to equipment maintenance, machining tasks, and statutory compliance. The Workshop Supervisor ensures that all work carried out within the workshop meets required engineering standards, is performed in a safe working environment, and is properly documented and reported to the relevant Maintenance Coordinators.

Major Areas of Responsibility

  • Plan, oversee, and execute the day-to-day running of the allocated workshop, ensuring all work is carried out safely, efficiently, and in compliance with applicable HSE procedures.
  • Ensure the workshop is clean, well-organised, and fit for purpose — managing workspace allocation, housekeeping standards, and access control for all workshop users.
  • Identify, report, and escalate unsafe or hazardous working conditions immediately to the appropriate supervisor or HSE representative.
  • Take full accountability for the completeness, condition, and functionality of all tools and equipment assigned to the workshop.
  • Issue, receive, and track hand tools before and after daily maintenance activities, maintaining accurate records of tool movements and condition.
  • Manage the ordering and replenishment of tools, materials, and consumables through the Maintenance Coordinator, ensuring adequate stock levels at all times.
  • Maintain an up-to-date equipment register, action tracker, and equipment maintenance parts list for all workshop assets.
  • Operate and maintain workshop machinery — including lathes, milling machines, and drilling machines — ensuring safe performance and compliance with HSE practice.
  • Review engineering drawings, blueprints, and technical specifications prior to commencing work to ensure accurate production and conformance to standards.
  • Take precise measurements for cutting, shaping, and machining activities using vernier callipers, micrometer screw gauges, and other appropriate instruments.
  • Select appropriate machines, tooling, settings, and materials for each task, applying knowledge of strength of materials to ensure quality output.
  • Develop and maintain an equipment maintenance plan, ensuring timely repair of failed equipment and a minimum of 98% availability of light/heavy-duty vehicles and lifting equipment.
  • Compile the statutory equipment list and coordinate all preparations for regulatory inspections, re-certifications, and compliance activities.
  • Intervene promptly during equipment breakdowns or malfunctions to minimise downtime and restore safe operations.
  • Provide daily workshop activity reports, equipment registers, and action tracker updates to the Maintenance Coordinator.
  • Mentor and supervise apprentices and junior technicians, encouraging skills development and upskilling across the team.
  • Contribute to ongoing safety improvement initiatives and operational best practice reviews.
  • Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the Line Manager.

Minimum Requirements

  • B.Sc., B.Eng., or HND in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related engineering discipline from a recognised institution.
  • Minimum of 8 years of practical and working experience in an oil and gas maintenance workshop environment, with demonstrable hands-on experience in machining, fabrication, and mechanical maintenance.
  • Proven experience in operating and supervising the use of workshop machinery including lathes, milling machines, and drilling machines.
  • Ability to carry out precision measurements using vernier callipers, micrometer screw gauges, and other metrology instruments.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and work from engineering drawings, P&IDs, mechanical schematics, and technical specifications.
  • Knowledge of strength of materials and the ability to select appropriate materials for machining and repair tasks.
  • Knowledge of equipment performance monitoring, reliability determination, and maintenance scheduling principles.
  • Knowledge of oil and gas HSE policies and practices, including PTW (Permit to Work) and mechanical isolation procedures.
  • Knowledge of oil and gas industry construction standards and codes including API, IEC, NEC, ANSI, NFPA, and ASTM.
  • Experience in technical report writing, maintenance documentation, and equipment record keeping.
  • Computer literacy — proficiency in Microsoft Office applications for reporting, documentation, and maintenance tracking.
  • Relevant experience in a similar workshop supervisory role within an oil and gas or industrial facility.

Additional Desirable Qualifications

  • M.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related discipline is an added advantage.
  • Membership of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (MNSE) or registration with the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN).
  • NEBOSH or equivalent oil and gas HSE certification.
  • Experience with Computerised Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) such as SAP PM or equivalent.
  • Certification in lifting operations, rigging, or crane supervision is an added advantage.
  • Knowledge of statutory inspection requirements for pressure vessels, lifting equipment, and other regulated assets under DPR/NUPRC guidelines.
